Novo statement to QuickBooks or Xero: integrations, CSV export, monthly statements and tie-out

Novo business checking is popular with freelancers and small businesses. Novo offers app integrations with QuickBooks Online and Xero, a CSV download of account activity and monthly statements. Its help pages are brief, so part of the job is checking for yourself what actually landed in the books.

What Novo gives you

  • Xero integration. Connect from Novo: on the web, Apps (bottom of the left menu) → Xero → Connect, then sign in to Xero; in the app, More → Apps → Xero. Novo says transactions then sync automatically, your past year of transactions is uploaded, and new activity updates regularly in the background. If the connection is lost, disconnect and connect again from the same screen (Novo: how do I connect Xero to my account?, updated Oct 20, 2026).
  • QuickBooks Online integration. Go to Apps, search for QuickBooks Online, choose Connect and sign in. Novo says there's no cost to connect (Novo: can I connect QuickBooks to Novo Bookkeeping?, updated Oct 20, 2026). See the next section for what that connection does.
  • CSV download of activity. Go to Activity (web: left menu; app: More → Activity) → Download CSV → choose a date range. Novo says you can share this with your accountant or upload it to tools like QuickBooks or Xero (Novo: how do I export my account history for tax filing?, updated Oct 20, 2026). Novo also points you to the CSV for any accounting tool it doesn't integrate with (Novo: which accounting tools can I connect?, updated Oct 20, 2026).
  • Monthly statements. Each month's statement is available to download on the first of the following month. On the web: profile menu (top right) → Settings → Statements; in the app: More → Settings → Statements. Novo doesn't offer multi-month or partial-month statements; for recent activity it points you to the CSV in Activity (Novo: where can I download my account statements?, updated Oct 20, 2026).

Where Novo's pages disagree

Novo's general pages say QuickBooks and Xero integrations "sync your transactions automatically", so you don't need to upload them manually (Novo: how do integrations work?; Novo, both updated Oct 20, 2026). But Novo's current QuickBooks page describes connecting so you can view your profit and loss and expense categories in Novo, and says "your data will appear in Novo" (Novo). That reads as data flowing from QuickBooks into Novo, not Novo transactions flowing into QuickBooks. Novo's 2020 launch post says the opposite direction: transactions upload to QuickBooks with the previous year's history, then sync hourly, and it recommends connecting from Novo rather than from QuickBooks (Novo: Novo launches QuickBooks integration, May 12, 2020). That post is six years old and its menu names (an "Integrations" tab) no longer match the current "Apps" menu. After connecting, open the QuickBooks bank account and check whether Novo transactions are actually arriving, and from what date, before you rely on it.

What Novo's help pages don't say

  • The statement file format. The statements page says you can download statements but doesn't name the format. Check what you get before you plan an import around it.
  • How far back statements go. We didn't find a stated limit on how many months stay available, or where closed accounts' statements live. Download every month the books need now.
  • What's in the CSV. Novo doesn't list the columns, date format or sign convention, or say whether it includes a running balance. Open it before importing and check it against what QuickBooks or Xero expects (below).
  • Sync timing and history. For Xero, Novo says "past year" and "regularly", with no schedule. For QuickBooks, the only history and timing figures (previous year, hourly) are in the 2020 post. Neither current page says whether pending items sync. Check the earliest date that actually lands and treat everything before it as a gap.
  • QuickBooks Desktop, OFX or .qbo files. The pages we read mention QuickBooks Online only and offer CSV as the only export. See can QuickBooks Desktop import a PDF bank statement.

Which route for which months

  • Going forward: the integration, once you've confirmed transactions are landing in the right ledger account.
  • Catch-up months the sync doesn't cover: Novo's Activity CSV, with the date range set to the statement month, imported only for dates the account doesn't already have.
  • Proof for each month: the monthly statement. That's what you tie out to, whichever file you import.

QuickBooks Online

  • For months before the feed, Intuit's manual upload takes a PDF or image statement in English, or a QBO, QFX or CSV file. A list file must be 350 KB or less, with 3 columns (Date, Description, Amount) or 4 (Date, Description, Credit, Debit), up to 1,000 lines per upload (Intuit: manually upload transactions into QuickBooks Online, updated Aug 24, 2026). If Novo's CSV has other columns, delete them or map only these.
  • Intuit says the file should start at least one day before your oldest QuickBooks transaction in that account (Intuit). Upload only dates before the feed started. See duplicate transactions after a bank upload.
  • Intuit also says accountants can't connect a bank account for their clients (Intuit: connect bank and credit card accounts, updated Oct 1, 2026). Novo's connection starts from the Novo app, so expect the client to do that part.

Xero

  • Novo says the Xero connection uploads the past year of transactions (Novo). If you're importing older months by file, stop the file at the day before the first synced line.
  • Novo is on Xero's list of banks with validated PDF extraction for selected statement types (checked 26 Oct 2026). Xero's PDF import is for US and Canada organizations, not the Xero Ledger plan; files must be English, 35 MB or less, up to 100 pages, at least 200 DPI, not password protected, one file per bank account. Xero also says to prefer OFX over PDF if your bank offers it (Xero Central: import a PDF bank statement); the Novo pages we read don't mention OFX.
  • For a CSV, Xero needs at least Date and Amount, with money in positive and money out negative in one column, and no opening or closing balance columns (Xero Central: import a bank statement in CSV format). Novo doesn't document its CSV layout, so check columns and signs first.
  • Xero treats lines matching ones already in Xero as duplicates and won't import them (Xero Central), but synced and file lines can differ in wording, so import only the months the account doesn't already have.

More detail: how to import bank statements into Xero from a PDF and importing transactions older than your Xero bank feed.

Tie out each month before you import

  1. For each account: opening balance + deposits − withdrawals = closing balance on the Novo statement, to the cent.
  2. Chain the months: each closing balance equals the next statement's opening balance.
  3. Sum the CSV rows for the month and compare them with the statement's net change. Because the CSV is cut by date range, a difference usually means the range was off by a day, a pending item, or a filter left on in Activity.
  4. Spot-check the first and last days of the period and the largest few items against the statement.

The full method is in check a bank statement PDF is complete before you import it. Our free tie-out checker runs in your browser and shows the row where a CSV stops balancing. Then reconcile one statement at a time, oldest first; if QuickBooks says the beginning balance is off, see beginning balance doesn't match.

Where LedgerReady fits

For most Novo months, the integration or Novo's own CSV is the right tool. We're useful when all you have is the PDF statements: a client who sends PDFs and won't share app access, a closed account, or months you need to tie out to the printed balances. If you'd rather not convert and check each month yourself, LedgerReady turns digital statement PDFs into a QBO file, a Xero CSV, a plain CSV and a tie-out sheet showing every month matches its opening and closing balance. It costs $15 per statement-month, and we aim to deliver within 12 hours. Tie-out guarantee: if the output doesn't reconcile to the statement's opening and closing balances and we can't fix it, you don't pay for that statement.

Skip the manual work

We turn statement PDFs into QBO, Xero and CSV files plus a tie-out sheet. $15 per statement-month, $149 for a 12-month catch-up. Prefer to check it yourself? Our tie-out checker runs in your browser. See how pros do catch-up.
