Wells Fargo statement to Xero: download, convert and import
Xero can take Wells Fargo data three ways: a bank feed (going forward), a file download for recent activity, and PDF statements converted to CSV for older months. For catch-up work you usually need the last two.
1. Recent activity: Download Account Activity
In Wells Fargo online banking, open the account and choose Download Account Activity. Pick the date range and a format. Xero imports OFX/QFX and CSV files, so choose the Quicken (QFX/OFX) option if it is offered, or comma-delimited otherwise. The date range available for download is usually shorter than the statement archive.
2. Older months: PDF statements
Go to Statements & Documents, choose the account and download each monthly PDF. Name the files by account and period (for example 4821_2025-03.pdf) so you can see at a glance if a month is missing.
3. Shape the CSV for Xero
- Xero's bank statement CSV needs at least Date and Amount, plus a payee or description. Download Xero's own template from the import screen and match its columns.
- Wells Fargo's plain comma-delimited download often has no header row. Add headers before importing so you can map them.
- Use one signed Amount column: money in positive, money out negative.
- Keep one date format throughout the file, and set the matching format in Xero's import step.
4. Tie out before you import
- For each statement: opening balance + all amounts = closing balance.
- Chain months: each closing balance must equal the next opening balance. Wells Fargo's daily balance summary helps find the exact day a break starts.
5. Import into Xero
- In Xero go to Accounting → Bank accounts, open the account's menu and choose Import a statement.
- Upload the file, map the columns, and check the preview.
- If a bank feed is already connected, import only dates before the feed started to avoid duplicates.
- Reconcile the imported lines, then compare Xero's statement balance with the PDF.
