Zions Bank statement to QuickBooks or Xero: exports, the end of Direct Connect, eStatements and tie-out

Zions Bank, a division of Zions Bancorporation, N.A., gives business customers Business Digital Banking, with transaction exports, eStatements and several ways to connect QuickBooks. Zions says its Direct Connect service ends on October 30, 2026, so some clients will be changing how their accounts reach QuickBooks. Here's what Zions documents, and what it doesn't, for getting a business account's history into QuickBooks or Xero.

What Zions Bank gives you

  • Exports in five formats. Zions' business user guide says Account options, Export transactions lets a user export transactions from one or more accounts, either since the last download or for a specific date range, as PDF, CSV, OFX, Quickbooks or Quicken. OFX, Quickbooks and Quicken files don't include daily balances (Zions Bank: Business Digital Banking User Guide, Version 05.26).
  • Web Connect files. Zions' Direct Connect page describes Web Connect as a manual download that works with Quicken, QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online, using .QFX for Quicken and .QBO for QuickBooks. You import the .QBO file in QuickBooks Desktop with File, Utilities, Import, Web Connect Files, or in QuickBooks Online with Banking, Upload from file. Its FAQ says Web Connect lets you pick a time range and download up to 18 months of activity, including loan and credit card activity (Zions Bank: Direct Connect for Business, no date).
  • Express Web Connect. Zions recommends Express Web Connect as the replacement for Direct Connect: transactions come in automatically, with no manual imports or file downloads (Zions Bank). The schedule of fees lists Express Web Connect and Web Connect at no charge (Zions Bank: Business Accounts Schedule of Fees, Utah, effective October 13, 2026).
  • eStatements back to 2016. The user guide says you can view and download eStatements and eNotices from eDocuments, historical statements are available back to 2016, and eTax Documents are available for the last three years (Zions Bank). Zions' business eDocuments page says a fully entitled Customer System Administrator sets the company's eDocuments preferences (Zions Bank: Business eDocuments, no date).

Before you start

  • Direct Connect ends October 30, 2026. Zions says Direct Connect for Business will be discontinued on October 30, 2026, after which downloads through it stop. New enrollments ended April 30, 2026. It points users to Express Web Connect or Web Connect (Zions Bank). If a client's QuickBooks Desktop file was updating through Direct Connect, note the date of its last download, so you know which months need a file or a statement.
  • Bookkeeper access. The user guide says every Business Digital Banking profile has at least one Customer System Administrator (CSA), who creates users and sets their entitlements, from view only to full access. A user can export only from accounts they've been granted (Zions Bank). Zions' agreement says that if you share your sign-in with a third-party service, that service is your agent, not the bank's, and you're responsible for its use (Zions Bank: Digital Banking Service Agreement, October 2026). Ask the client's CSA to add you as your own user instead of sharing their login. Intuit says accountants can't connect a bank account for their clients (Intuit: connect bank and credit card accounts, updated Oct 1, 2026).
  • Tax documents need full access. The agreement says that in Business Digital Banking only users with full entitlement to view and transact on every account in the profile can see eTax Documents (Zions Bank).
  • Closing an account can end online access. The agreement says access to Digital Banking, including eDocuments, may be ended or suspended without notice if all enrolled accounts are closed, or if no one signs in for 120 days in a row (Zions Bank). Download every statement and export the books need before a client closes or moves an account.
  • Other Zions divisions. The agreement says Zions Bancorporation, N.A. also operates as Amegy Bank, California Bank & Trust, National Bank of Arizona, Nevada State Bank, The Commerce Bank Northwest and Vectra Bank Colorado, and that accounts at each division need their own enrollment (Zions Bank). This guide covers Zions Bank's pages only. Check the other divisions' own pages before you assume the same steps or dates.

Where Zions' pages need checking

  • Does Express Web Connect work with QuickBooks Desktop? Zions' Direct Connect page says Express Web Connect works with Quicken and QuickBooks Online. The same page then gives QuickBooks Desktop steps under "How to Connect Using Express Web Connect" (Banking, Bank Feeds, Set Up Bank Feeds for an Account), with a note that Intuit has discontinued most Desktop editions and only Enterprise remains fully supported (Zions Bank). That's Zions' summary of Intuit's plans. For Desktop, check which connection Bank Feeds actually offers for Zions in the client's edition. Web Connect .QBO files are the route Zions lists for Desktop without that conflict. Intuit says QuickBooks Desktop connects through Direct Connect or Web Connect (.qbo) files (Intuit: set up bank accounts for Bank Feeds in QuickBooks Desktop, updated Aug 5, 2026).
  • Direct Connect fees. The Direct Connect page says to contact Zions for business fees and that the monthly fee includes Bill Pay at no extra cost (Zions Bank). The schedule of fees lists Direct Connect Access at $9.95 a month and Direct Connect Access with Bill Pay at $12.95 a month (Zions Bank). Once Direct Connect ends, these fees should stop mattering, but check the client's account analysis if they were charged.
  • 18 months or any date range? The Direct Connect FAQ says Web Connect downloads go back up to 18 months (Zions Bank). The user guide's export takes a specific date range and doesn't state a limit (Zions Bank). The same FAQ says Direct Connect imports typically go back only three years. Plan on 18 months for files, and confirm what the export screen actually returns.
  • How long statements stay online. The business user guide says historical statements go back to 2016 (Zions Bank). Zions' personal eDocuments FAQ says an eDocument generally stays viewable as long as the account is open and active (Zions Bank: eDocuments, personal section, no date), and the agreement says online access may end when accounts close (Zions Bank). Don't count on reaching old statements after an account closes.
  • Where the export lives. The Direct Connect page says to open the account and select Download Transactions or Export (Zions Bank). The user guide puts it under Account options, Export transactions, on the Accounts page, and calls the option Quickbooks without naming a file type (Zions Bank). Check that the file is a .QBO before you import it into Desktop.

What Zions' pages don't say

  • Statements before 2016. The pages we read don't say how to get a statement older than the eDocuments history. The schedule of fees lists a research copy of a statement at $5.00 per statement and research at $30.00, without saying how far back research reaches (Zions Bank).
  • Whether view-only users can export. The user guide says fully entitled users can view, manage and download account information, and that custom users can be limited to view only (Zions Bank). It doesn't say whether a view-only user can export or open eStatements, so ask the CSA to check your access.
  • What the CSV contains. The pages don't describe the CSV columns.
  • Overlap when switching from Direct Connect. Zions doesn't say whether the first Express Web Connect download repeats transactions Direct Connect already brought in. Check the first month after the switch for duplicates.
  • Xero. We didn't find a Zions page about a Xero bank feed; we haven't confirmed one either way.

Which route for which months

  • Going forward on QuickBooks Online: Express Web Connect, which Zions recommends, or .QBO uploads in date ranges that don't overlap anything already imported.
  • Going forward on QuickBooks Desktop: Web Connect .QBO files, or a Bank Feeds connection if the client's edition offers one for Zions (see above).
  • The last 18 months: exports in QuickBooks, OFX or CSV format, per Zions' Web Connect FAQ.
  • Older months, Xero, or an account about to close: the PDF eStatements, downloaded and saved while they're still online.
  • Every month: tie the imported lines out to the statement before you reconcile (below).

QuickBooks Online

Xero

  • Zions Bancorp is on Xero's US list of banks with validated PDF extraction (checked 26 Oct 2026), so high-quality results are likely, but Xero says it validates selected statement types and recommends OFX over PDF when your bank offers it. Zions' export offers OFX (Zions Bank), so use it for months still in the export window. Xero's PDF import is for US and Canada organizations, not the Xero Ledger plan; files must be English, 35 MB or less, up to 100 pages, at least 200 DPI, not password protected, one file per bank account (Xero Central: import a PDF bank statement). Check every imported month against the statement.
  • If you build a CSV instead, Xero needs at least Date and Amount, with money in positive and money out negative in one column, and no opening or closing balance columns (Xero Central: import a bank statement in CSV format).
  • Xero treats lines matching ones already in Xero as duplicates and won't import them (Xero Central), but don't rely on that; import only the months the account doesn't already have.

More detail: how to import bank statements into Xero from a PDF and closed bank account statements into QuickBooks or Xero.

Tie out each month before you import

  1. Opening balance + deposits − withdrawals = closing balance on the Zions statement, to the cent.
  2. Chain the months: each closing balance equals the next statement's opening balance.
  3. Sum the file's or feed's lines for the statement period and compare them with the statement's net change. A difference usually means a missing transaction type, an overlapping download, or a date range off by a day.
  4. Spot-check the first and last days of the period and the largest few items against the PDF.

The full method is in check a bank statement PDF is complete before you import it. Our free tie-out checker runs in your browser and shows the row where a CSV stops balancing. Then reconcile one statement at a time, oldest first; if QuickBooks says the beginning balance is off, see beginning balance doesn't match.

Where LedgerReady fits

For Zions Bank, Express Web Connect and Web Connect files cover ongoing months, and exports reach back about 18 months; the PDF eStatements are the record for older months, Xero, an account about to close, or a gap left when Direct Connect stopped, and for any month you want tied to the bank's statement balances. If you'd rather not convert and check each month yourself, LedgerReady turns digital statement PDFs into a QBO file, a Xero CSV, a plain CSV and a tie-out sheet showing every month matches its opening and closing balance. It costs $15 per statement-month, and we aim to deliver within 12 hours. Tie-out guarantee: if the output doesn't reconcile to the statement's opening and closing balances and we can't fix it, you don't pay for that statement.
