First Citizens Bank statement to QuickBooks or Xero: Digital Banking for Business exports, eStatements and tie-out
First Citizens Bank (First-Citizens Bank & Trust Company) gives small business customers Digital Banking for Business, with transaction exports, eStatements and Web Connect downloads for Quicken and QuickBooks. Its FAQ and interactive user guide describe the steps, but its agreement and fee schedule add limits the FAQ doesn't mention. Here's what First Citizens documents, and what it doesn't, for getting a business account's history into QuickBooks or Xero. This guide covers Digital Banking for Business on firstcitizens.com only, not Commercial Advantage or other platforms, and not other banks with "First Citizens" in their name.
What First Citizens gives you
- Transaction exports. First Citizens' business user guide says that on the Account Transactions screen you filter transactions by date range, transaction type or amount, then pick a format to download the transaction data (First Citizens: Digital Banking for Business User Guide, page 24, linked from the Digital Banking Support page). The FAQ says transaction history can be downloaded "into Excel formats" for most accounting systems (First Citizens: Digital Banking for Business FAQ, no date).
- Web Connect files. The FAQ's Quicken Web Connect steps are: open the account, select the Filter icon, choose Custom Date, set the range, apply the filter, then select the download arrow and choose qfx for Quicken (First Citizens). First Citizens' Intuit conversion instructions say to download a Web Connect file (.qbo or .qfx) for QuickBooks Online and upload it with Banking, File Upload, and to download a QuickBooks (.qbo) file for QuickBooks Desktop and import it with File, Utilities, Import, Web Connect Files (First Citizens: Intuit Conversion Instructions, published 6/2022).
- eStatements for about 24 months. The user guide says checking, savings and Business Equity Line eStatements are generally accessible for 24 months, and credit card eStatements for 16 months. You pick the account, the statement date and a document type, then download (First Citizens: User Guide, page 240). Tax documents are under Statements & Documents, Tax Documents (First Citizens).
- Web Connect at no charge. The Digital Banking for Business fee schedule lists Digital Banking through QuickBooks software and through Quicken software, via Web Connect, at no charge, and says Web Connect access requires enrollment in First Citizens Digital Banking or Commercial Advantage (First Citizens: Digital Banking for Business Fee Schedule, no date).
Before you start
- Bookkeeper access. The FAQ says you can create users through Manage Users and grant access to accounts, with account- and transaction-level rights, and that a fee may apply for additional users (First Citizens). The fee schedule lists $7.50 a month for more than 2 users on an account with a deposit account (First Citizens). The user guide says a user with Manage Users rights creates the new user's login ID and password and then sets their rights (First Citizens: User Guide, page 134). The agreement says a user with "Manage User Entitlement" access is responsible for adding users and setting their access (First Citizens Digital Banking Agreement, effective March 30, 2026). Ask that user to add you as your own user. Intuit says accountants can't connect a bank account for their clients (Intuit: connect bank and credit card accounts, updated Oct 1, 2026).
- Don't use the client's login. The agreement says you agree not to give your security credentials to anyone, and that if you do, you've authorized that person even if they go beyond what you allowed (First Citizens).
- New devices need a code. The FAQ says the first sign-in from a new device needs a one-time secure access code, unless the device is registered (First Citizens). Plan for that before a deadline.
- Save statements while they're online. At about 24 months for deposit accounts and 16 for credit cards (First Citizens), a catch-up job that reaches back further needs another source. The agreement also says some statements may not be available as eStatements, and that First Citizens may end or suspend Digital Banking at any time without notice (First Citizens). Download every statement and export the books need before a client closes or moves an account.
Where First Citizens' pages need checking
- A custom date range, or three statement cycles? The FAQ and user guide describe exports by custom date range and don't state a limit (First Citizens; First Citizens). The agreement says transaction history information is available for the current statement cycle plus the previous two statement cycles (First Citizens). If that's what the export returns, files reach back only about three months, and the PDF statements are the record for anything older. Check the earliest date the export actually gives you.
- Which file types? The FAQ names qfx for Quicken and "Excel formats" (First Citizens). Only the 2022 conversion instructions name .qbo for QuickBooks (First Citizens). No page we read names CSV, or says which "Excel formats". Intuit says QuickBooks Desktop imports Web Connect files in .qbo format (Intuit: set up bank accounts for Bank Feeds in QuickBooks Desktop, updated Aug 5, 2026), so check the file's extension before you import it.
- Free, or $11.95 a month? The fee schedule lists Web Connect access through QuickBooks at no charge, and separately lists Digital Banking through QuickBooks software at $11.95 a month for 8 sessions (with extra sessions at $0.75 each), Quicken at $5.95, and a $4.95 monthly surcharge for using a business account with Quicken (First Citizens). It doesn't name the connection the paid lines cover. The FAQ says to contact First Citizens to enroll in Quicken or QuickBooks, while its own Web Connect steps are a plain download (First Citizens). Ask the client whether they enrolled in anything and check their account analysis before you set up a connection.
- Logging in from accounting software. The FAQ says many accounting software packages support logging in to Digital Banking to download account history (First Citizens). The agreement says not to give your security credentials to anyone (First Citizens). The pages don't say how the two fit together, so if a connection asks for the client's First Citizens sign-in, the client should be the one to enter it.
- An older document. The conversion instructions were published in June 2022 for customers whose bank was converting to First Citizens (First Citizens). The menus may have changed since. The FAQ and user guide carry no date.
What First Citizens' pages don't say
- Statements older than 24 months. The pages we read don't say how to get them or what a copy costs. The agreement points to First Citizens' Disclosure of Products and Fees for paper statement fees (First Citizens), which we didn't read.
- What the export contains. The pages don't describe the columns in the Excel or other files.
- Limited users. The pages don't say whether a user with limited rights can export or open eStatements. Ask the user who manages access to check yours.
- Overlapping downloads. The conversion instructions warn that overlapping dates in a new download can create duplicate transactions, so note the last successful upload (First Citizens). The current FAQ doesn't repeat this.
- Xero. We didn't find a First Citizens page about a Xero bank feed; we haven't confirmed one either way.
Which route for which months
- Going forward on QuickBooks Online: .qbo or .qfx Web Connect uploads in date ranges that don't overlap anything already imported, or whatever connection QuickBooks offers for First Citizens in the client's file.
- Going forward on QuickBooks Desktop: Web Connect .qbo files.
- The last few months: exports from Digital Banking for Business, once you've confirmed the file type and how far back the export reaches.
- Older months, Xero, or an account about to close: the PDF eStatements, downloaded and saved within the 24-month window (16 months for credit cards).
- Every month: tie the imported lines out to the statement before you reconcile (below).
QuickBooks Online
- Intuit's manual upload takes a PDF or image statement in English, or a QBO, QFX or CSV file. A list file must be 350 KB or less, with 3 columns (Date, Description, Amount) or 4 (Date, Description, Credit, Debit), up to 1,000 lines per upload (Intuit: manually upload transactions into QuickBooks Online, updated Aug 24, 2026). Intuit says the file should start at least one day before your oldest QuickBooks transaction in that account (Intuit). If a connection already brought in some of a month, see duplicate transactions after a bank upload.
- Intuit says you can't download the same transactions into a QuickBooks Desktop company file more than once, and once you delete downloaded transactions you can't download them again (Intuit: download bank feed transactions in QuickBooks Desktop, updated Aug 5, 2026). Back up the company file before you change its connection or import a file. For months with only a PDF, see can QuickBooks Desktop import a PDF bank statement.
Xero
- Xero's US list of banks with validated PDF extraction includes "First Citizens Bank" (checked 26 Oct 2026), but several US banks use that name and Xero doesn't say which one it means, so don't assume the listing covers First-Citizens Bank & Trust Company. Xero also says it validates selected statement types, that accuracy might vary for banks it hasn't validated, and recommends OFX over PDF when your bank offers it. First Citizens' pages don't say whether its export includes OFX. Xero's PDF import is for US and Canada organizations, not the Xero Ledger plan; files must be English, 35 MB or less, up to 100 pages, at least 200 DPI, not password protected, one file per bank account (Xero Central: import a PDF bank statement). Check every imported month against the statement.
- If you build a CSV instead, Xero needs at least Date and Amount, with money in positive and money out negative in one column, and no opening or closing balance columns (Xero Central: import a bank statement in CSV format).
- Xero treats lines matching ones already in Xero as duplicates and won't import them (Xero Central), but don't rely on that; import only the months the account doesn't already have.
More detail: how to import bank statements into Xero from a PDF and closed bank account statements into QuickBooks or Xero.
Tie out each month before you import
- Opening balance + deposits − withdrawals = closing balance on the First Citizens statement, to the cent.
- Chain the months: each closing balance equals the next statement's opening balance.
- Sum the file's or feed's lines for the statement period and compare them with the statement's net change. A difference usually means a missing transaction type, an overlapping download, or a date range off by a day.
- Spot-check the first and last days of the period and the largest few items against the PDF.
The full method is in check a bank statement PDF is complete before you import it. Our free tie-out checker runs in your browser and shows the row where a CSV stops balancing. Then reconcile one statement at a time, oldest first; if QuickBooks says the beginning balance is off, see beginning balance doesn't match.

Where LedgerReady fits
For First Citizens, Web Connect files cover ongoing months, the agreement describes transaction history for only the current and previous two statement cycles, and eStatements stay online for about 24 months, so the PDF statements, saved while they're available, are the record for older months, Xero, an account about to close, and any month you want tied to the bank's statement balances. If you'd rather not convert and check each month yourself, LedgerReady turns digital statement PDFs into a QBO file, a Xero CSV, a plain CSV and a tie-out sheet showing every month matches its opening and closing balance. It costs $15 per statement-month, and we aim to deliver within 12 hours. Tie-out guarantee: if the output doesn't reconcile to the statement's opening and closing balances and we can't fix it, you don't pay for that statement.
Skip the manual work
We turn statement PDFs into QBO, Xero and CSV files plus a tie-out sheet. $15 per statement-month, $149 for a 12-month catch-up. Prefer to check it yourself? Our tie-out checker runs in your browser. See how pros do catch-up.
